Sectors - Leisure

Kingswood Leisure . Bristol

PEP were appointed as civil and structural engineering design consultants for this large leisure complex, located on a green field site. The development includes a 13 screen multiplex cinema, bowling alley, fitness centre, theme pub and various restaurants, together with a 1,000 space undercroft car park.

The structural framing and foundation solutions proposed by PEP included insitu concrete flat slab construction to the undercroft car park and steel framed super-structures.

The civil engineering design included an adoptable dual carriageway and a private road. The design of a land drainage system obviated the need to store or treat surface water run-off.

British Racing Drivers Club . Silverstone

PEP were appointed as civil and structural engineering design consultants for the new club house at Silverstone, which replaced the old structure and was conceived as a backdrop for the British Grand Prix. The intention was to create a highly transparent building and this was achieved by the steel and structural glass façade, supported by glass fins, allowing uninterrupted 180-degree views of the circuit.

Due to the tight 26 week construction programme and a deadline that could not be moved . The British Grand Prix . coupled with the complex curved kidney shaped plan, a reinforced concrete flat slab was adopted as the ideal frame solution. This also provided an obstruction free service void area giving maximum flexibility. The roof terrace is covered by a tensile fabric canopy supported on a steel structure allowing viewing of the motor racing in all weathers.

Holmes Place . Bittacy Place, London NW7

PEP were appointed as civil and structural engineering design consultants for this three storey steel framed building, which is constructed on a raised podium in order to provide semi-basement car parking facilities.

The development includes the provision of a single storey, steel framed structure to the rear of the main building, housing two swimming pools.

The structure is supported on piled foundations, installed using the .screwpile. system in order to avoid seepage of contaminates into the underlying aquifer.

Barton Leisure Centre, Oxford

PEP were appointed as civil and structural engineering design consultants as part of a Design and Build team headed by SDC Construction.

A brand new leisure centre including new gymnasia, cafe and swimming pool.

Steel framed building on traditional foundations with composite floors.

Shrewsbury School

PEP were appointed by the School Governors to act as civil and structural engineering design consultants for the two phase project, comprising a new Cricket School and Swimming Pool at Shrewsbury School.

Both buildings utilise steel frame construction, which in the case of the Swimming Pool was designed to mimic a wave form. Due to poor ground, piled foundations were required to Cricket School, whereas the Swimming Pool has traditional mass concrete pads and strips. A variety of cladding solutions were employed, including timber boarding and curtain walling. The roofs are finished in proprietary lightweight standing seam system.

The existing storm and foul drainage to the school discharges to a combined sewer. Special measures were therefore required to limit overall storm water discharge rates from the two buildings, necessitating below ground attenuation and pumping.
