Poplar Baths was built in the early 1930s as a bathing facility in the east end of London. The building was used as swimming baths right up until its closure in 1985, where it was subsequently used as a training centre until 1988. The site had since been vacant, and had begun to deteriorate. The historic nature of the building and its iconic interior gave rise to its Grade-II listing by English Heritage in January 2000. PEP were appointed by Guildmore in 2013 to provide a structural and civil engineering services for the refurbishment and redevelopment of Poplar Baths.  The £13m development brings the building back into use as a leisure centre with swimming pool, gym, sports hall and rooftop MUGA. PEP have worked closely with English Heritage and the local authority conservation officer in order to specify sensitive repairs to the retained structural elements of the building. The project is due to be completed in summer 2016.

PEP were appointed as civil and structural engineering design consultants for this four storey steel framed building, which was constructed behind a retained, listed masonry façade.

The development comprised basement and ground floor restaurants and shops, together with a six screen cinema on the upper floors, constructed within an extremely tight site, in the town centre and within the financial constraints imposed by the Client.

The demolition of the existing building and the construction of piled foundation and basement structure necessitated careful consideration of the stability of the adjoining listed buildings and façade retained.
